ALL ABOUT YEAR 1
Welcome to the Year One page, here we hope you find everything you need to know about Year One at Hambleton Primary Academy.
In Year 1 we will be working very hard to develop our existing skills as well as learning lots of new and exciting things too!
We follow a creative curriculum based on the Key Skills that children are required to know for their year group. We ensure that we have cross-curricular links with other subjects to delve deeper into each topic.
P.E – Thursday afternoon. Please ensure children come to school dressed in their kit, with suitable trainers, and they are wearing no jewellery on this day and hair is tied back.
Homework – Please can this be returned to school on a Friday morning so we can mark their work and prepare the books for the following week. The progress the children make informs our planning for the following week also.
The Year 1 Curriculum
Year 1 Children follow the phonics programme “Letters and Sounds” and our school reading scheme which centres on the Oxford Reading Tree- though not exclusively. They also use “Bug Club” (Active Learn) online. All Year 1 children have access to iPads and Laptops to further their learning in reading. We believe that it is so important for children to read and experience books widely and often every day.
Cross-curricular learning is evident and our curriculum ensures that we delve into each topic extensivley in order to provide a range of knowledge and new skills which are taught to the children. Children have the opportunity to explore this independently at the beginning of the year. They have access to Continuous Provision linking skills to tasks. This will support the childrens resilience and independence skills.
Progress is regularly monitored by myself and Mrs Wood, the Headteacher. After discussions with you as the parents, intervention is put in place to support the child as needed. We are inclusive and are always here to support your child grow and enjoy their learning as well as ensuring they are achieving the most at home too.
In Year 1 the children complete a statutory Phonics assessment in June, children are preparing for this all year with their daily Phonic sessions and it is made into a fun way of recognising 20 real and 20 non-real words. There will be a meeting early next year to explain the test in more detail.
Homework is set every Friday with one comprehension activity (related to their home reader), 5 spellings to learn to be tested the following Friday and a Maths challenge which the children can independently complete.
Keep your eye out on the school Facebook page for updated photos and information on our learning journey through Year One. We look forward to supporting and encouraging your child’s amazing learning this year.
