ALL ABOUT YEAR 2

tA big, warm welcome to our Year Two page at Hambleton Primary Academy, here we hope you find everything you need to know about us!

In Year Two we follow the Key Skills Curriculum which is a very creative approach based on the National Curriculum which makes sure the children learn and develop skills appropriate for their year group. We will be working hard to develop our existing skills as well as learning lots of new and exciting things this year! We will also focus on ensuring there has been no missed learning from 2019 – 2020 due to the pandemic and will cover objectives missed when appropriate through our engaging, creative curriculum.

We ensure every lesson meets the needs of the whole class and endeavour that each child succeeds in their Bronze, Silver or Gold challenges, they love this whole school approach and can not wait to move up to the next task in their learning. We have also introduced ‘Challenge Time’ which further challenges children after they have finished Gold. The children also take responsibility for their learning and show their learning journey on their learning objectives.

We plan as a Key Stage and throughout this year Year One and Two will cover ‘Who am I?’, ‘Once Upon a Time’, ‘Dungeons and Dragons’, ‘Ahoy Me Hearties’, ‘Dinosaur Planet’, ‘Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside’ and ‘Explorers’. We provide a broad and engaging curriculum which is based on the children’s interests and ways of learning which sees all children achieving the best they can. We ensure lessons are engaging and foster a love for learning, as we plan through a book, we aim these at the children’s age and interests as we foster a love of reading across school. Cross-curricular learning is at the heart of all our topics and we ensure a relevant link is made to all subjects possible. We also guarantee a progression of skills taught from Year One to Year Two and monitor this to inform future planning.

During this year we will promote the Year two child’s love of learning, independence and curiosity. We do this through our teaching but also through our Multi-Academy Trust’s motto of ‘Be the best you can be’. In my class, we also follow my motto of ‘It’s okay to not know, but it’s not okay to not try’, words which have helped shape and develop my teaching career.

Throughout the year we will also have Entitlement Experiences to further our skills and understanding of the wider world past the school walls. These will be documented on our school’s Facebook page with photos uploaded as and when they happen. They will also show a set of progressive skills from Nursery all the way to Year Six.

Year Two is an important year in regard to assessment and their SATs in May 2020, however we ensure all lessons are always creative, engaging and challenging to prepare children for this. Progress is regularly monitored by myself and Mrs Wood, the Headteacher. After discussions with you as the parents, intervention is put in place to support the child as needed. We are inclusive and are always here to support your child grow and enjoy their learning as well as ensuring they are achieving the most at home too.

Homework is set every Friday with 5 spellings to learn to be tested the following Friday morning (with an extra 3 following the spelling pattern rule), a Maths challenge which the children can independently complete as well as Reading challenge to develop their comprehension skills and love of reading through a Book Review. We also have a range of log ins for the children to develop their learning on APPs including; Bug Club, Timetables Rockstars, Sumdog and SPaG.com. Resource packs may be sent home throughout the year to help target or challenge your child’s areas of learning whether it be in reading, writing or their maths abilities. We also have to complete a reflection of the week as part of our homework which asks us about books we have read out of our Reading scheme and to discuss one thing we have learnt in the week as well as something that made us proud of ourselves (in or out of school!).

We are extremely lucky to have Forest School sessions with Mr Goldie and Mrs Slinger on a Wednesday afternoon this Autumn term and we can not wait to learn life skills which we will be able to put into use at both home and school. Forest School develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Den building, paint making, smores eating, hot chocolates, fire maintenance, tree climbing and cooking are just a few of the amazing opportunities we will be given!

In Year two we have a Proud Cloud where our amazing achievements outside of school are displayed, children are invited to bring in medals, trophies or certificates of their achievements and their photo gets proudly placed upon on our Proud Cloud.

P.E is every Friday afternoon in Year Two, please make sure your child comes to school in the full and correct P.E in kit school. Coloured house t-shirts can be bought from our school office. We will be going outside no matter the weather this year so please make sure the correct clothing is worn or brought to school.

Finally, always keep your eye out on the school Facebook page for updated photos and information on our learning journey through Year Two of the year 2020 – 2021. We look forward to supporting and encouraging your child’s amazing learning this year as well as being there for home support if needed.

Thank you and here’s to an amazing year,

Miss Crayston, Mrs Rea and Mr Barnaby 😊
