ALL ABOUT YEAR 5
Welcome to our Year Five page, here we hope you find everything you need to know about us at Hambleton Primary Academy.
In Year Five we follow the Key Skills Curriculum which is a very creative approach based on the National Curriculum which makes sure the children learn and develop skills appropriate for their year group. We will be working hard to develop our existing skills as well as learning lots of new and exciting things this year too!
We ensure every lesson meets the needs of the whole class and endeavour that each child succeeds in their Bronze, Silver or Gold challenges, they love this whole school approach and cannot wait to move up to the next task in their learning. We have also introduced ‘Challenge Time’ which further challenges children after they have finished Gold. The children also take responsibility for their learning and show their learning journey on their learning objectives.
We plan with Year 6 and throughout this year we will cover ‘Britain Raided’, ‘Raging Rivers and Monstrous Mountains’ and ‘The Ancient World’. We provide a broad and engaging curriculum which is based on the children’s interests and ways of learning which sees all children achieving the best they can. We ensure lessons are engaging and foster a love for learning, cross-curricular learning is at the heart of all our topics and we ensure a relevant link is made to all subjects possible. We also guarantee a progression of skills taught from Year 5 to Year 6 and monitor this to inform future planning.
During this year we will promote the Year 2 child’s love of learning, independence and curiosity. We do this through our teaching but also through our Multi-Academy Trust’s moto of ‘Be the best you can be’. We also follow the Academy Trust’s core values of Pride, Ambition, Resilience, Respect, Integrity and Excellence, all of which are incorporated into every lesson.
Throughout the year we will also have Entitlement Experiences to further our skills and understanding of the wider world past the school walls. These will be documented on our school’s Facebook page with photos uploaded as and when they happen. They will also show a set of progressive skills from Nursery all the way to Year 6.
Year Five is the beginning of Upper Key Stage 2 with much of the knowledge they accumulate preparing them for SATs at the end of Key Stage 2. However, we ensure all lessons are always creative, engaging and challenging to prepare children for this. Progress is regularly monitored by myself and Mrs Wood, the Headteacher. After discussions with you as the parents, intervention is put in place to support the child as needed. We are inclusive and are always here to support your child grow and enjoy their learning as well as ensuring they are achieving the most at home too.
Homework is set every Friday with 10 spellings to learn to be tested the following Friday morning, an arithmetic challenge which the children can independently complete as well as a reading challenge to develop their comprehension skills and love of reading. We also have a range of log ins for the children to develop their learning on ‘Apps’ including; Bug Club, Timetables Rockstars, Sumdog and SPaG.com. Resource packs may be sent home throughout the year to help target or challenge your child’s areas of learning whether it be in reading, writing or their maths abilities.
P.E is every Tuesday morning in Year 5; please make sure your child comes to school in the full and correct P.E in kit school. Coloured house t-shirts can be bought from our school office. Swimming is every Thursday afternoon, until Summer Term; please ensure all children have a pair of goggles and girls have a swimming cap.
Clubs are changed half termly and there will always be an option for Year 5 so please check these out on the newsletter and encourage your child to take part in an after-school club.
Throughout the year we will be lucky to have a Peripatetic Music instructor support us for one term. We also have Fleetwood Town who come in and talk healthy lifestyles. These expert teachers will enhance our skills and teach us through games, theory and practical lessons linked to our topics.
Finally, always keep your eye out on the school Facebook page for updated photos and information on our learning journey through Year Five of the year 2019 – 2020. We look forward to supporting and encouraging your child’s amazing learning this year as well as being there for home support if needed.
Thank you and here’s to an amazing year,
Mr Goldie and Mrs Slinger 😊
