ALL ABOUT YEAR 6

Welcome to our Year Six page, here we hope you find everything you need to know about us at Hambleton Primary Academy.

In Year Six we follow the Key Skills Curriculum which is a very creative approach based on the National Curriculum which makes sure the children learn and develop skills appropriate for their year group. We will be working hard to develop our existing skills as well as learning lots of new and exciting things this year too!

We ensure every lesson meets the needs of the whole class and endeavour that each child succeeds in their Bronze, Silver or Gold challenges, they love this whole school approach and cannot wait to move up to the next task in their learning. We have also introduced ‘Challenge Time’ which further challenges children after they have finished Gold. The children also take responsibility for their learning and show their learning journey on their learning objectives.

We have planned as an UKS2 team and throughout this year we will cover ‘Who am I?’ ‘Battle of Britain’, ‘Lands of Fire and Ice’ and ‘Crime and Punishment’. We provide a broad and creative curriculum which is based on the children’s interests and ways of learning which sees all children take control of their own learning and progression. We ensure lessons are engaging and foster a love for learning, cross-curricular learning is at the heart of all our topics and we ensure a relevant link is made to all subjects possible. We also guarantee a progression of skills taught from Year 5 to Year 6 and monitor this to inform future planning.

During this year we will promote the love of learning, independence and curiosity. We do this through our teaching but also through our Multi-Academy Trust’s motto of ‘Be the best you can be’. We also follow the Academy Trust’s core values of Pride, Ambition, Resilience, Respect, Integrity and Excellence, all of which are incorporated into every lesson.

Throughout the year we will also have Entitlement Experiences to further our skills and understanding of the wider world past the school walls. Always keep your eye out on the school Facebook page for updated photos and information on these and our learning journey through Year Six.

Year Six is very much about preparing our children for SATs at the end of Key Stage 2. However, we ensure all lessons are always creative, engaging and challenging, as we want the children to have both a memorable final year with us, but also knowledge and skills for the future. Progress is regularly monitored by myself and Mrs Wood. After discussions with you as the parents, interventions and booster session are put in place to support the child as needed. We are inclusive and are always here to support your child grow and enjoy their learning as well as ensuring they are achieving the most at home too.

Homework is set every Friday via Google Classroom, except for comprehension, which will be sent home as a booklet. Your child will be given 10 spellings to learn and will be tested the following Friday morning. We also incorporate an arithmetic challenge, which the children can independently complete. During these uncertain times, we are unable to send home reading books, however, your child has access to Bug Club whereby they can access books suitable for their reading level. We also have a range of log ins for the children to develop their learning on the following ‘Apps’: Times Tables Rock Stars; and SPaG.com. Resource packs may be sent home throughout the year to help target or challenge your child’s areas of learning – whether it be in reading, writing or their maths abilities.

P.E is every Thursday in Year Six; please make sure your child comes to school in the full and correct P.E in kit.

As you are already aware, Year Six is an important year and cannot be a success without your continued support, so if any issues arise please feel free to come and see us. No matter how small you think this may be. We look forward to supporting and encouraging your child’s amazing learning this year, as well as being there for home support if needed.

Thank you and here is to an amazing year,

Mr Kenworthy and Mrs Gudgeon
