Hambleton Primary Academy seeks to provide an all-round education for children in a bright, stimulating and fun atmosphere. We have the highest expectations of pupil attainment, teacher performance and parental involvement and we encourage everyone to strive for excellence, in order to achieve potential. We seek challenge and embrace change in order to improve.

Our Curriculum:

  • Concentrates on progression of skills, especially independent learning.
  • Helps teachers to assess the standards pupils are working at – also helps with provision for gifted and able and SEN children.
  • Provides learning targets and next steps.
  • Is exciting, engaging and fun.

Using the National Curriculum’s 6 key skills as a basis, we have developed a broad and balanced skills based curriculum. By developing contexts for learning, we aim to “hook children’s interest” in learning whilst being able to say precisely which standard children are at in each curriculum subject.

We have:

  • Designed a curriculum which is distinctive to our school and meets our pupils’ needs

Which will help us to:

  • Raise standards in the foundation subjects
  • Raise standards in basic skills
  • Enhance our tracking of children’s achievement across the curriculum
  • Develop creative approaches to learning whilst raising standards.

Promoting Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural Development

Hambleton Primary Academy is committed to ensuring that:

  • Extremism should not form part of our curriculum or teaching and that our pupils are encouraged to respect other people and no pupil is discriminated against contrary to the Equality Act 2010
  • Spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) standard will be strengthened so that we promote the fundamental British values of:
  • democracy,
  • the rule of law,
  • individual liberty and
  • mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs.

As an Academy we are not bound by the National Curriculum, but follow our own broad and balanced, skills based curriculum which is progressive. (Children in Early Years follow the statutory EYFS Curriculum.) Teachers plan together (Foundation Stage; Years 1 and 2; Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6) basing learning around broad themes which the children have helped to choose. For example, a recent Year 5/6 theme was “Chocolate and Fair Trade. This involved an enterprise activity of making, marketing and selling chocolates as well as a visit to a chocolate factory to investigate the processes studied on a larger scale. Children learned about their power as consumers as well as developing their knowledge of a contrasting locality overseas. They considered ethical issues and developed their understanding of how farmers’ lives can be affected by fair trade. Additionally, they investigated the transportation of food, the need for preservation and the impact of micro-organisms. In art, the children gained an understanding of how advertisers use emotive images of people to encourage consumers to buy goods. We seek curriculum themes which will excite, inspire and motivate learning at all ages. The children are very involved in shaping both the creation and development of themes and we encourage responsibility and independence from a very early age. Whilst we have defined our curriculum “drivers” as ambition, enterprise, physical and emotional well-being and consideration and response, the progression of literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum are viewed as vitally important and these are developed at all times. All children in KS2 and Year 2 have iPads (each) as well as access to lap tops, and Nursery, Reception and Year 1 also have access to iPads and lap tops. We seek to integrate and develop the children’s use of ICT at every available opportunity.

All year groups are taken on visits which will enhance learning. Additionally, Year 6 also attend a residential visit and we always include an annual activity for the whole school to share. This year, we are all going to the pantomime; in other years we have had had whole school cinema visits which we have attended in costume. These are particularly enjoyed by the children who appreciate the shared experience. 

All children in our school now have weekly music lessons delivered by Music specialists as we are keen that all children should leave our school being able to read music. This is in addition to extra-curricular music activities and choir which are offered free of charge, and peripatetic lessons for which some parents pay a fee. We have termly music concerts for families which are very well attended. MfL is delivered by an MfL specialist teacher.

Additionally, all year groups share performances for parents throughout the year; Nursery and Reception perform a Christmas Nativity; Years 1 and 2 perform a Christmas themed performance; Years 5 and 6 perform a pantomime in January and Years 3 and 4 present a spring concert. Additionally, Junior children perform an Carol concert for parents which they also take out into the community to sing for the Hambleton Over 70’s groups as well as various Nursing Homes, and Year 6 present their large annual Leavers’ Assembly. Reception Children always have a Graduation Ceremony in front of their parents. We see these performances as an integral part of school life and our mission to develop the whole child; all our children are used to performing on a stage and we firmly believe that this is a massive driver to building confidence- which impacts so positively on all other aspects of learning.

We have an extensive range of extra-curricular activities for all year groups apart from Reception children, which cover the seasonal range of sports as well as music, art, cooking etc. Details are always sent out to parents at the start of each term. We encourage all children to take part and monitor participation to ensure that all children are fully engaged and that no one is missing out.

The School Nurses deliver sex-education lessons to children in upper-Key Stage 2 and SMSC is taught directly, (assemblies, RE,) indirectly through curriculum themes, (eg Year 6 discuss the dropping of the atomic bomb and human rights,) and through every interaction staff have with children, guiding them to be thoughtful, caring and know the difference between right and wrong.
